Laboratory of Spoken and Computer Mediated Communication of the University of Tartu collects and investigates spoken and computer mediated Estonian language and interaction. We use conversation analysis and interactional linguistics as primary research methods.

Corpora

Laboratory of Spoken and Computer Mediated Communication of the University of Tartu has created and develops two language resources: Corpus of Spoken Estonian and Systematic Corpus of Computer Mediated Language.

Research Topics

The main research projects of Laboratory are spoken institutional interaction and communication in instant messengers and chat-rooms. Primary research topics include the construction and functioning of adjacency pairs (especially questions and requests and their second pair parts), the usage of interactional particles (jah, ahah etc.), the structure and functioning of repair, categorisation, syntactic features, typology of sociolects and principles of corpora development. Laboratory does a close work with Vőru Institute, see project EKT13 Corpus of Vőru ja Seto Language, 2011-2014. National Programme for Estonian Language Technology, principal investigator Sulev Iva.
